may be handled by internal support or by Computas METIS Support.
- Additions to the Resources page for NCR intranet mailing
lists, Web sites, and other NCR courses.
This ReadMe contains important information about using the METIS Tutorial
including installation considerations and known problems and workarounds.
This ReadMe is available on the NCRU METIS Tutorial with METIS 3 Engine CD under
\Tutorial\ReadMe.txt.
INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS
===========================
The METIS 3 Tutorial setup installs the Lotus Media Player plug-in and creates
a shortcut on your desktop and in the METIS 3.0 program group. Following is
additional information about the setup.
SCREENCAM MOVIE PLUG-IN
-----------------------
The Lotus Media Player plug-in is used to play ScreenCam movies in the METIS
Tutorial.
INTERNET EXPLORER PATH
----------------------
During setup you are prompted for your Internet Explorer folder. Note that
the default folder may be displayed using the DOS 8.3 short filename format (for
example, C:\Progra~1\Intern~1). The short name is a valid format and will be
handled correctly by the setup. The Internet Explorer folder is typically one of
the following:
C:\Progra~1\Intern~1
C:\Progra~1\Plus!\Micros~1
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer
C:\Program Files\Plus!\Microsoft Internet
METIS 3 TUTORIAL SHORTCUT
-------------------------
On Windows NT systems, the METIS 3 Tutorial shortcut may be created in a
duplicate METIS 3.0 program group on the Start menu. So from the Start menu,
Programs sub-menu, you will see a METIS 3.0 program group containing the
Tutorial shortcut in the top area (current user area) of the Programs menu and a
METIS 3.0 program group containing the METIS shortcuts in the bottom area (all
users area).
STARTING THE TUTORIAL
---------------------
When you begin the Tutorial, the table of contents in the left frame may be
expanded depending on whether or not you had a previous version of the Tutorial
you were completing. Click the Reset button to collapse the contents.
KNOWN PROBLEMS
--------------
Following is a list of known problems and workarounds at the time of this release.
Known problems are also included on the Course Instructions page of the Tutorial.
For the latest troubleshooting information, see the METIS 3 Tutorial
Troubleshooting Web site at

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM: I get an error when I try to start the Tutorial.
o The shortcut may be set incorrectly. Run the Tutorial setup again. When you are
prompted for your Internet Explorer folder, make sure that the correct folder
displays. If you are unsure if the default value is correct, use the Browse
button to locate the folder. The Internet Explorer folder is typically one of
the following:
C:\Progra~1\Intern~1
C:\Progra~1\Plus!\Micros~1
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer
C:\Program Files\Plus!\Microsoft Internet
Note: The Internet Explorer path may be shown using the DOS short filename
format (as shown in the first two example paths). This is a valid format.
PROBLEM: The ScreenCam movies do not run.
o The Lotus Media player plug-in may not be installed correctly. Run the
Tutorial setup again and make sure when prompted for your Internet Explorer
folder, that the correct folder displays. If you are unsure if the default value
is correct, use the Browse button to locate the folder. The Internet Explorer
folder is typically one of the following:
C:\Progra~1\Intern~1
C:\Progra~1\Plus!\Micros~1
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer
C:\Program Files\Plus!\Microsoft Internet
Note: The Internet Explorer path may be shown using the DOS short filename
format (as shown in the first two example paths). This is a valid format.
PROBLEM: There is no sound on ScreenCam movies.
If you are not hearing any sound, try the following:
o Make sure the volume on your PC or speakers is turned up.
o Double-click the sound icon in your task bar. Make sure the volume
is turned up and that nothing is muted.
o On Windows NT systems, if you do not have a sound icon on your task
bar, you probably do not have a sound device installed. You may need
to obtain a sound driver from your PC vendor. See your vendor's
Web site.
o Make sure your speaker or headphones are plugged into the appropriate
jack.
o Check whether your PC is using a sound scheme other than the Windows default.
To do this, complete the following steps:
1. Click the Start menu, choose Settings, then Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Sounds icon to display the Sounds Properties dialog.
3. Check the Schemes field. If this field is not blank and is set to a scheme
other than Windows Default, choose Windows Default from the drop down list.
4. Click an Event that has a sound icon next to it and press the Play
(right-arrow) button. You should hear a sound.
5. Now run a movie to verify that you have sound.
PROBLEM: Internet Explorer crashes.
o Pressing a specific sequence of the movie control panel buttons, then clicking
the Close Window button can cause Internet Explorer to crash. This sequence is
Pause, Play, Stop, followed by the Close Window button. Verify that the file
npsc.dll in your Internet Explorer plug-ins directory has a date of April 14,
1998. If not, copy the file D:\Tutorial\ScreenCam\npsc.dll, where D is your
CD-ROM drive, to your Internet Explorer plug-ins directory. If you also have
Netscape installed, copy this file to your Netscape plug-ins directory if an
older version of npsc.dll exists there. If the new dll does not solve the problem,
avoiding the Pause, Play, Stop, Close Window sequence should prevent the problem
from happening. You can close the movie window without first stopping the movie.
o A few users have reported that occasionally when the Tutorial accesses the CD-ROM
drive, for example, when you click a help link or movie link, Internet Explorer
will close without warning. In most cases, you can restart the Tutorial without
encountering the problem again. If the problem persists, contact METIS support.
PROBLEM: Movie segments continuously repeat or do not continue automatically.
If a movie segment plays repeatedly or if the movie stops at each segment:
o Try stopping the movie and playing it again.
o Click the Go to Segment control and manually start each segment.
o Reboot your PC and try the movie again.
PROBLEM: The audio and video are not synchronized when I play a movie.
If the audio and video in a movie are not synchronized:
o If you were playing an individual movie segment, try playing the entire movie.
o If you were playing the entire movie, try clicking the Go to Segment control
and manually starting each segment.
PROBLEM: Help file does not seem to open.
o If the help file is open in the background and you click another link, the help
file may remain in the background. Maximize it from the task bar.
o The CD-ROM drive letter may not be set correctly. Go to the Welcome page or
the bottom of the table of contents and verify that the CD-ROM drive letter
is correct. If not, select the correct drive from the drop down list. Also
make sure the METIS CD is in the CD-ROM drive.
PROBLEM: Exercise files don't open.
o The CD-ROM drive letter may not be set correctly. Go to the Welcome page or
the bottom of the table of contents and verify that the CD-ROM drive letter
is correct. If not, select the correct drive from the drop down list. Also
make sure the METIS CD is in the CD-ROM drive.
PROBLEM: Cursor turns to hourglass
Sometimes the cursor turns to an hourglass and does not return to the arrow.
This does not affect the functionality of the tutorial. No action is required.
